Sporting Kansas City announced Tuesday that they have agreed to transfer their 21-year-old midfielder Oriol Rosell to Sporting CP in Lisbon, Portugal.

Sporting KC will receive two-thirds of the transfer fee that is rumored to be around 1.8 million per MLS rules. Sporting KC will also receive a percentage of any future transfer from Sporting CP to another club.

Sporting KC issued a public statement regarding the transfer of Rosell.

"We wish Uri the best of luck in pursuing this new opportunity,” said Sporting Club CEO Robb Heineman. “The perception from the outside might be that the timing is not great, but from the inside we believe that the timing is perfect. It opens the door for Uri and for us. Uri came from Barcelona B to Sporting Kansas City, won an MLS Cup and furthered his development on the field. This transfer helps enable us to retain our core players while adding pieces to the team. As we continue to build our roster for the future, and looking at our goal of pursuing championships, we identify what types of players we need to have on our roster to compete continuously for the U.S. Open Cup, MLS Cup and Champions League. This move has also expanded the relationships we have built with many top clubs, opening access to similar players around the world, showcasing what can be accomplished in Kansas City and the other platforms that open up from here."

Less than a month ago on May 10th Oriol Rosell had one of his best games as a pro against the Montreal Impact.

Rosell set an MLS recorded for passes completed and completion percentage, he finished the day with 160 out of 166 passes completed wish is 96%  of passes completed.

While it may be disappointing to lose Rosell in the middle of the season the fact is this move is huge for Sporting KC and the MLS as a whole.

Rosell walked on as a free transfer with Sporting KC in August of 2012. During that time, Oriol Rosell has been a major contributer in a MLS Cup Championship and has now developed to a point that he will be competing in the 2014-2015 UEFA Champions League with Sporting CP.

Peter Vermes will be credited with the further development with Sporting KC and that will go a long way with future players wanting to play for Sporting KC as well as larger teams having interest and willing to pay more for Sporting KC players.

Sporting is already rumored to be looking for players to potentially replace Rosell.
