KC Chiefs Could Face Punishment For Tampering From NFL

KC Chiefs fans were overwhelmed with excitement Sunday night when reports starting flowing in that former Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Jeremy Maclin plans to reunite with Andy Reid and sign with the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Maclin signing news was quickly followed by the news first reported by Adam Caplan of ESPN.com that linebacker Tamba Hali has agreed to take a pay cut that will free up some much needed cap for the KC Chiefs.

Soon after that NFL.com’s Ian Rapaport tweeted out that the Chiefs plan on releasing Dwayne Bowe to free up more cap room. The Hali and Bowe news fully supported the report that the KC Chiefs and Maclin had agreed on a deal.

Monday morning saw more news roll in that backed up the Maclin signing report. First it was reported by CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora that KC Chiefs center Rodney Hudson had agreed to a deal worth $44.5 million over five years with the AFC West division rival Oakland Raiders.

Mike Florio of NBC Sports then reported that KC Chiefs defensive lineman Mike DeVito has agreed to take a pay cut that reduces his 2015 cap number from $5.4 million to $2.5 million.

The offseason is a tricky time of year for front offices all across the NFL because there are many rules that keep them from poaching potential free agents from other teams before the new league year begins on March 10th at 4 PM. The problem is reports were flying out that a lot of potential big name free agents were agreeing on contracts with other teams.

The KC Chiefs reportedly agreed to a deal with Jeremy Maclin, the Oakland Raiders reportedly agreed to a deal with Rodney Hudson, the Miami Dolphins reportedly agreed to a deal with Ndamukong Suh, etc…

There is a pre-free agency period that began on Saturday, March 7th that allows teams to negotiate with the agents of potential free agents. There is a fine line between negotiating with an agent, and agreeing on a deal that teams must be careful of. You are not allowed to actually offer a contract to a potential free agent until the free agency period has started.

As of Monday night no teams have currently been accused of breaking any of the rules that are in place, but according to Mike Florio of NBC Sports, the NFL has threatened to investigate violations of negotiating-period rules.

The KC Chiefs along with Oakland and Miami were some of the teams to be tied to some of the big name free agents that would likely be investigated if the NFL decides to look into their negotiations. If found guilty of breaking the rules, teams could lose draft picks among other penalties.

Lets hope the KC Chiefs can avoid any discipline and sign Jeremy Maclin when they are allowed to on Tuesday.
