KC Chiefs: Could Todd Herremans Be A Potential Target

facebooktwitterreddit

The KC Chiefs had their fair share of struggles on the offensive line last season and everyone is well aware of that. Brandon Lee Gowton of Bleeding Green Nation reported on Thursday that the Philadelphia Eagles released guard Todd Herremans. Should the Chiefs be making a run at the long time guard?

Todd Herremans is 32 years old and spent all 10 years of his career with the Philadelphia Eagles, after they drafted him in the fourth round in 2005. Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid used to coach in Philadelphia and had a hand in drafting Herremans, so is that a potential reason that the team will try to sign him?

Herremans has played just about every position on the line except for center, which is the one spot on the line that shouldn’t be an issue in Kansas City, assuming Rodney Hudson gets re signed this off season. Herremans’ versatility bodes well for the Chiefs, as the rest of their line has not looked terrific. It’s nice to know that he could be plugged basically anywhere on the line and do a decent job at it.

Guard wise, the Chiefs have Jeff Linkenbach and Mike McGlynn on the left side, and Zach Fulton and Jeff Allen on the right side. Mike McGlynn is terrible and will hopefully not even be on the roster in 2014. Linkenbach is barely an upgrade, so if Herremans came to Kansas City, that’s likely where he’d play.

He’d be a great veteran addition to a line that struggled in 2014. Alex Smith was sacked 45 times last season and barely had any time to make plays. If the Chiefs want Smith to make big plays, they need to give him time to throw and that starts with adding help up front. Herremans would provide a seasoned veteran, and could serve as a mentor for any offensive linemen drafted this year.

Something to keep in mind with Todd Herremans is that he’s 32 and coming off a season where he missed several games due to a torn bicep. That also probably means he could be an affordable option for the Kansas City Chiefs.

While there’s certainly talented offensive linemen available in this year’s draft, I would imagine that Kansas City will address the wide receiver position before anything else. Bringing in Todd Herremans would allow KC Chiefs fans to relax a little more, knowing that a seasoned vet would be coming in and able to help out up front and protect Alex Smith.

Would you want to see Todd Herremans as a Kansas City Chief in 2015?
