KC Chiefs: Would Randall Cobb Be A Feasible Target

The KC Chiefs need to upgrade their roster, especially on offense, and one of the notable free agent receivers on the market is Randall Cobb of the Green Bay Packers.

The Kansas City Chiefs didn’t have a wide receiver touchdown all last year. Yes, that might be old news, but it doesn’t change the fact that this offense needs a boost at the wide receiver position.

Cobb had a monster year for the Packers with 91 receptions for 1,287 yards and 12 touchdowns. For anyone keeping track, Cobb had 12 more touchdowns than the entire Chiefs wide receivers.

In other words, if Randall Cobb comes to Kansas City, he’d be Alex Smith‘s favorite target and would provide big plays for a team that liked to throw the ball short distances last year.

Terez Paylor recently did a write up on some free agents that the Kansas City Chiefs should go after and Cobb was first on his list. He had this to say about Cobb,

"Primarily a slot receiver who occasionally lines up in the backfield. Is incredibly quick and comfortable working over the middle, plus he’s a dangerous runner after the catch — can turn a short pass into a big play."

Paylor had a segment on each player where he discussed the financial aspects with the help of cap analyst and former agent Joel Corry. Here is what Corry was quoted saying in Paylor’s article about Cobb’s financial circumstances,

"“He says he wants to stay, and he did something every smart before the season — he said he hadn’t earned a contract extension and didn’t want to negotiate an extension off an injury-played season. He’s capped by Nelson’s contract, which is a $10 million-a-year deal. In no instance should he be signing for less than Greg Jennings got at $9 million a year and $17.8 million in guarantees.”"

More than likely, Cobb will stay in Green Bay. Think about it. He has one of the best quarterbacks in the league right now in Aaron Rodgers and gets to play along side Jordy Nelson. He’s familiar with their system and even said he’d like to stay a Packer if possible (Source of article: Joel Corry of CBS Sports).

The Chiefs don’t have a lot of money to spend on Cobb, so if they do want to make a push for him then they’ll need to release some players on the roster. This might include Tamba Hali, Chase Daniel, and even Dwayne Bowe. Personally, I would easily take Cobb for Bowe, but that’s just me.

The Chiefs have to decide whether they should keep Bowe, for $14 million, cut him and take the $9 million dollar hit in cap dead money, or find a way to restructure his deal. The situation will need to be decided before the Chiefs can make a move on any good wide receiver free agents.

610 Sports also jumped on board the Randall Cobb wagon. Ben Heisler interviewed Cobb on Monday while out in Arizona for the Super Bowl. One of Cobb’s responses was intriguing.

Now obviously that doesn’t mean much, but it was cool that Cobb has been talking to Kansas City people about the Chiefs. Whether that sways him in this direction, I doubt it, but it’s still good information to see on Twitter when it comes to free agency.
