The Kansas City Chiefs are back in the Super Bowl but many around Chiefs Kingdom are thrilled, most of America isn’t happy about it.

With two straight titles and five appearances in the past five years, fans urged the Baltimore Ravens, Buffalo Bills or anybody else to make it out of the AFC. But after the Chiefs defeated the Bills in Sunday’s conference championship game, Kansas City is heading to New Orleans looking for a third straight championship.

If casual football fans are suffering from Chiefs fatigue, imagine what their rivals are thinking. While Patrick Mahomes will lead the Chiefs against the Philadelphia Eagles for a second time, it’s another former Super Bowl opponent that is still salty about coming up short and using it as an opportunity to bleed green on Feb. 9.

Deebo Samuel is Still Salty About Losing to the Chiefs in Super Bowl

San Francisco 49ers receiver Deebo Samuel has lost twice to the Chiefs in the Super Bowl and the give him all the fuel in the world to cheer for the Eagles while speaking on B/R's Cleats & Convo's podcast earlier this week.

“[The Chiefs] beat me twice so I got all the reason to hate,” Samuel said. “It’s the Chiefs and the Eagles. You know I’ve got a love/hate for both, but I got all the love for my brother A.J. Brown over there, so I definitely want to see him win. I definitely don’t want to see Mahomes get the third one. I’m rocking with A.J. and [Saquon Barkley] with this one for sure.”

Samuel’s angst toward the Chiefs makes sense. The 49ers held a 20-10 lead entering the fourth quarter of Super Bowl LIV before the Chiefs scored 21 unanswered points in the fourth quarter en route to a 31-20 victory.

The Chiefs and the 49ers had a rematch in last year’s Super Bowl and took a 22-19 lead after Jake Moody’s 27-yard field goal in overtime. But Mahomes led a 13-play, 75 yard drive capped with a touchdown pass to Mecole Hardman with three seconds remaining to defeat the 49ers again and win back-to-back titles.

There are also other moments involved where Samuel felt the 49ers could have won those games. Jimmy Garoppolo overthrew Emmanuel Sanders for what could have been a game-sealing touchdown in the fourth quarter of Super Bowl LIV and Kyle Shanahan didn’t explain the overtime rules to his team correctly in last year’s Super Bowl, allowing Mahomes to march down the field for a game-winning touchdown.

But Samuel’s selective memory may have also forgotten his history against the Eagles. When the 49ers traveled to Philadelphia for the NFC Championship Game in 2023, Brock Purdy suffered an elbow injury that led to a 31-7 defeat.

Perhaps it was because there was only a trip to the Super Bowl compared to a championship on the line in that game. But Samuel’s disdain for the Chiefs still looks large as Kansas City looks for another title.
