Unexpected QB Claims He’s ‘Better’ Than Patrick Mahomes
Even though the Summer Olympics are well in the rearview mirror, a lot of football fans are already looking ahead to 2028. After all, the next Summer Games will be held in Los Angeles in 2028 and will feature the debut of more new sports, including flag football.
With the addition of Olympic flag football on the horizon, much of the discussion has surrounded the NFL's potential participation at the event.
Seeing today's stars dominate the competition in L.A. would be a ton of fun, however, the fact the 2028 regular season will begin about a month after that has people wondering if the top NFL players would be willing to risk a late-offseason injury.
Of course, some people believe that NFL players shouldn't have Olympic team spots handed to them. One potential Olympian has even gone as far as saying he'd be a better fit for the 2028 team than the best quarterback on the planet.
Chiefs News: Darrell Doucette Claims to Be 'Better' Than Patrick Mahomes
In an interview with TMZ Sports on Wednesday, flag football quarterback Darrell Doucette made quite an audacious statement. When questioned about Team USA's 2028 flag gridiron team, the 35-year-old told the reporter that he's "better than Patrick Mahomes because of my IQ of the game."
Claiming to be better than the face of the NFL is absurd on its own, but the hole-digging didn't stop there. Doucette even admitted that Mahomes is the best quarterback in the league, and he's also "more accurate." His only admitted edge over the Chiefs QB is that he knows flag football better.
TMZ Sports also added that Doucette sent them a text message after the interview, stating that he needs Mahomes to prove who the better player is.
The interview comes less than a week after Doucette told The Guardian that it's "disrespectful" that NFL players think they can "automatically" join the Olympic team.
While Doucette likely isn't a better gunslinger than Mahomes, it's easy to understand his self-confidence. The 35-year-old passer has more experience playing flag football — which is 5-on-5 — and even led Team USA to a world championship in 2022. That's without mentioning his lengthy list of highlight-reel plays.
Interestingly enough, it doesn't seem like Mahomes is taking Doucette's comments to heart. Shortly after the interview was posted, the three-time Super Bowl Champion QB took to X (formerly Twitter) to share a gif of rapper 50 Cent saying, "I'm like, what he say [expletive] me for?"
Friendly competition is never a bad thing, so let's hope things stay that way. At the end of the day, Doucette likely knows Mahomes is more talented than him, so all he's doing is trying to gain as much attention as possible. Judging by how things have gone thus far, his strategy is certainly working.
We'll know more about the NFL's potential participation as we get closer to the 2028 Los Angeles Summer Olympics. As great as it would be to see Mahomes lead the United States to victory, it's also understandable if the league doesn't want to risk a massive injury to any of its big names — even if it's "only" flag football.
In the meantime, Mahomes and the Chiefs have their eyes set on a bigger prize: the Lombardi Trophy. Fortunately, Kansas City is heading into the finale week of the NFL preseason with the best odds to win Super Bowl LIX (+500) on DraftKings Sportsbook.
