Patrick Mahomes Finally Unveils His Greatest Trick Yet
By Joe Summers
The moment Chiefs fans have been anxiously awaiting finally happened and it was just as glorious as everyone hoped it would be.
On third down in the first quarter against the Lions in the second preseason game, Mahomes rolled to his right before casually flipping a behind-the-back pass to Travis Kelce up the middle for a first down. A rocking crowd at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium let a triumphant roar loose, and the trick pass with so much anticipation had finally been completed.
Mahomes has said that Andy Reid purposefully calls plays to give Mahomes a chance to throw it. Based on the effectiveness of that throw, Reid might dial it up a few more times in the regular season.
Patrick Mahomes Finally Throws Behind-The-Back Pass
Social media was immediately set ablaze with people chiming in on the absurd nature of the pass. Mahomes playfully said after the game that Kelce ran the wrong route, prompting the throw "out of spite." If that's what it takes, then Kelce should mess up his routes more often.
The poor Lions' defender had no idea what was coming.
Kansas City would go on to lose the contest 24-23 on a last-second field goal, yet there's no question who won the day. Defensive coordinators all over the NFL now have to figure out a way to defend Mahomes' latest stroke of genius. Good luck with that.
The Chiefs have one more preseason game coming up on Thursday, though Mahomes is unlikely to play. If this is the last time we've seen him in the preseason, he certainly went out with a bang.
