Matt Nagy Calls Out Kadarius Toney Amid Roster Uncertainty
The middle of August signifies that NFL training camps are about to hit the next gear. There are only a few more weeks remaining until 53-man rosters must be finalized, meaning time is ticking for bubble players to prove that they deserve to be playing meaningful football games this fall.
The Kansas City Chiefs have a handful of players who are desperately trying to cling to their jobs, including Kadarius Toney. The veteran wide receiver has left much to be desired since making his way to the franchise, leaving the fanbase to wonder if he has what it takes to convince Andy Reid's coaching staff that he belongs.
As Toney's future in Kansas City is uncertain, one of his coaches has decided to call him out.
Chiefs News: Matt Nagy Calls Out Kadarius Toney
After Toney missed Saturday's preseason opener, Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy had a direct message for the oft-injured WR following Tuesday's practice. According to NFL insider Charles Goldman, Nagy said that Toney "has to get healthy" so that the team "can see what he does with reps."
Toney has battled with injuries throughout his young NFL career and those issues have followed him into training camp. The former Florida receiver missed time earlier this offseason with an ankle injury before being forced to sit out of last week's practices (and preseason game) with a back issue.
The Chiefs sent two draft picks to the New York Giants to acquire Toney back in October 2022. Although he showed promise during his time with New York, hopeful supporters thought a move to Kansas City could bring out the best in him — especially if he could foster some quick chemistry with Patrick Mahomes.
Instead, Toney's Chiefs tenure has been riddled with inconsistencies.
He's played 20 games in a Kansas City jersey over the last two seasons, catching 41 passes for only 340 receiving yards and three touchdowns. He also tallied 50 yards and a touchdown in three postseason games and failed to suit up for a single appearance during the franchise's latest Super Bowl run.
Toney has the size and speed to be an NFL receiver, but it's up to him to stay healthy enough to realize his potential. With fellow WR Marquise Brown banged up while last year's No. 1 wideout Rashee Rice potentially facing a suspension, there isn't a better time than now for Toney to step up.
Toney's next chance to prove himself will come when the Chiefs host the Detroit Lions on Saturday. As it stands, Kansas City is listed as the 6.5-point home favorite over Detroit, per FanDuel Sportsbook.
