The Chiefs officially waived undrafted rookie WR Phiilip Brooks on Monday, continuing a bevy of roster moves as the organization trims down from 90 players to 53.

A Kansas City native who starred at Kansas State before being signed by the Chiefs, Brooks impressed during training camp and is a likely practice squad candidate should he clear waivers.

He was never thought to be a legitimate threat to make the roster, yet Brooks' exciting and versatile skillset means he could contribute to his hometown franchise at some point in the future.

Chiefs News: KC Cuts Local Standout WR Philip Brooks

While only five-foot-seven, Brooks is a skilled return man on special teams with experience running the type of gadget plays that Andy Reid cherishes. He had 2,249 yards from scrimmage and 15 TDs during his career as a Wildcat, adding over 1,500 yards and four scores as the primary punt and kick returner.

Given the number of players being released prior to Tuesday's deadline, Brooks likely won't be a coveted waiver wire add. That means Kansas City should have the opportunity to add him to the practice squad, and his local ties suggest that's a strong possibility.

The Chiefs appear set at receiver, with JuJu Smith-Schuster's surprise signing creating a logjam at the position. At least one well-known veteran, like Kadarius Toney or Skyy Moore, will be cut. That means Brooks never had a real chance to join the full-time roster immediately, but he's a name Chiefs fans should become familiar with regardless.

Kansas City always supports its own. Brooks is as Kansas City as it gets, and hopefully one day fans will get to cheer him on at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium.
