Chiefs Make Shocking Cut in Heated Preseason Position Battle
By Joe Summers
The Chiefs made a surprising cut on Monday at a heated position battle, releasing veteran CB Kelvin Joseph ahead of Tuesday's roster cutdown deadline.
Joseph had looked like a possible starter for most of training camp, earning work with the starters in the secondary as Joshua Williams, Jaylen Watson, and Nazeeh Johnson all battled various injuries.
Instead, this release paves the way for an unexpected player to make the roster. Most roster projections had Joseph making the 53-man group, and now someone like sixth-round rookie Kamal Hadden or undrafted signee Miles Battle will likely earn a spot.
Chiefs News: KC Releases CB Kelvin Joseph
There were rumors that the Cowboys' former second-round pick would be cut. The timing of his release is interesting, as the Chiefs have primarily cut players so far that never truly had a chance to be on the team.
By releasing Joseph today, Brett Veach and the organization are giving him an opportunity to catch on with another team before major decisions are finalized. He's a talented player who enjoyed an impressive training camp, yet clearly didn't do enough to stick around.
One of Joseph's main advantages was his availability. His cut could also indicate that the Chiefs expect Williams, Watson, and Johnson to all be healthy for Week 1, providing a massive boost to the secondary overall.
Chiefs fans can expect to see more surprises before Tuesday's deadline officially passes. For now, this represents the biggest shock yet, even on a day in which JuJu Smith-Schuster came back for another run at a Super Bowl ring.
