Injured Chief's Return Pushed Back Despite Recent Social Media Post
By Joe Summers
Chiefs DE Charles Omenihu may still be a ways out from returning to the field from his torn ACL tear despite recent indications from his social media posts that he'd be back soon.
Head coach Andy Reid spoke to the media on Thursday and said he thinks "it'll be a little bit" before Omenihu can play, pouring cold water on the idea. While Omenihu's original target date suggested it'd be late October or early November, there was growing optimism that perhaps he was further along than initially expected.
Kansas City's defense is chugging along just fine, though there's no denying the value Omenihu brings as a pass-rusher.
Andy Reid Pushes Back on Charles Omenihu Return Optimism
It makes sense to bring Omenihu along slowly. Unlike the offense, the Chiefs' defense is still among the NFL's best and isn't dealing with any other significant injuries. Rashee Rice, Isiah Pacheco, and Hollywood Brown's respective ailments leave Matt Nagy's unit depleted, but there's no rush to get Omenihu back.
Once he's ready, the pass rush should terrify opponents. Omenihu notched seven sacks in 11 games in the regular season in 2023 before getting a strip-sack on Lamar Jackson in the AFC Championship, showcasing his tremendous ability on the edge.
Provided he's back for the playoffs, Kansas City will once again have a ferocious defense capable of dominating any offense.
On the bright side, Clyde Edwards-Helaire returned to practice after his stint on the injured reserve list dealing with PTSD symptoms. Considering how few experienced players are left offensively, his return could provide a spark.
For now, Omenihu will stay focused on his rehab and getting back to full strength for a second-half push.
