The Kansas City Chiefs held their first full-squad practice on Sunday but missed one of their key starters from last year’s Super Bowl squad.

Veteran safety Justin Reid was seen with a sleeve on his right knee as he didn’t practice with the team, per PJ Green of FOX4 News Kansas City. The Chiefs officially announced that the veteran defensive back is day-to-day with a knee injury and was placed on NFI (non-football injury list).

Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid told reporters that the veteran safety got the quad injury during the break between OTAs and camp, per Josh Alper of ProFootballTalk. The good news for Chiefs fans is that it's the beginning of training camp, so Reid will have the time to heal and prepare for the regular season.

Nonetheless, it is slightly worrisome that Reid has been dealing with this injury for some time, but the Chiefs will not rush him back until he’s 100 percent.

With the veteran defensive back sidelined at camp, it will allow rookie safety Jaden Hicks to get some snaps with the first-team defense. The Chiefs took Hicks in the fourth round of the 2024 NFL Draft out of Washington State.

The 6-foot-3 safety had a phenomenal 2023 season with the Cougars, posting 79 total tackles, six tackles for loss, four pass deflections, 2.5 sacks, and two interceptions. Along with Hicks, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Trey Dean and Deon Bush also get into the mix.
