Chiefs’ Third Camp Practice Reportedly ‘Rough’ on Offense

The Kansas City Chiefs' latest training camp practice was reportedly tough to watch when it came to the team's offensive players.

As the majority of NFL teams prepare to begin their training camps in the coming days, the Kansas City Chiefs already hit the ground running earlier this week. The Chiefs' rookies and quarterbacks arrived at Missouri Western State University on Tuesday and early reports indicated that everything was looking promising to begin camp.

Well, that was the case until Friday morning.

Chiefs News: Offense Struggles During Friday's Practice

With veteran quarterbacks Patrick Mahomes and Carson Wentz sitting out of Friday's practice, things got messy. According to Chiefs insider Adam Teicher's reports, the offense looked "rough" throughout the 7-on-7 drills and that 2024 first-round pick Xavier Worthy was held without a catch.

Third-year QB Ian Book led the charge under center and attempted to get a deep ball to Worthy, however, the pass was intercepted.

It's only the early stages of training camp, so there isn't much of a reason to press the panic button yet. There would be a bigger cause for concern if the blunders came with Mahomes or Wentz playing, so the fact that it only happened under Book's watch is the silver lining.

Besides, it was only on Thursday when Worthy was being praised for his chemistry with Mahomes. The former Texas Longhorn was targeted four times by the three-time Super Bowl MVP during yesterday's 7-on-7 practice, catching two of those balls and even scoring a touchdown.

Meanwhile, the jury is out regarding whether Book can even beat Chris Oladokun for the QB3 job. The former Notre Dame gunslinger has only made one start since being drafted 133rd overall by the New Orleans Saints in 2021 and didn't look good in it, going 12-of-20 (60.0%) in the pocket for 135 yards and two interceptions without a touchdown while being sacked eight times.

Even though Oladokun — a former 2022 seventh-rounder — is also largely unproven, it isn't absurd to imagine that he has more upside than Book.

Mahomes is the best quarterback on the planet and Wentz is a battle-tested veteran, meaning the offense will look much better when they're back under center. In the meantime, Book must step up his game if he doesn't want to risk being a training camp casualty.

We'll have a better idea of how Kansas City's attack is shaping up this weekend. The Chiefs' training camp will kick into full gear once the public practices begin on Sunday.

The future looks bright for the defending champions as they prepare to make history in 2024. DraftKings Sportsbook is currently favoring the Chiefs at +500 odds to become the first team to pull off a Super Bowl three-peat next February.
