Brett Veach and the Chiefs rarely fall asleep at the wheel, yet one recent trade for a former first-round WR is one Kansas City could've taken advantage of.

The Washington Commanders jettisoned 2022 No. 16 overall selection Jahan Dotson to the Philadelphia Eagles for a meager return on Thursday morning. Considering these are division rivals, it's likely Veach could've secure Dotson's services for less than the Eagles did.

With an underwhelming wide receiver room, Dotson would've been the perfect low-cost upgrade as the Chiefs try to win a third consecutive Super Bowl.

Chiefs Missed Out on Easy Trade for WR Jahan Dotson

Veach's incredible track record in the NFL Draft means it's always a hard proposition to trade away draft picks. However, Dotson is an immensely talented receiver that instantly would have the best pedigree of any player in the position group.

Entering only his third season, Dotson had seven TDs during his rookie campaign before a mediocre offense limited him to four in 2023. He had 1,182 yards and 12 TDs during his final year at Penn State, establishing himself as an elite red-zone weapon with strong route-running chops.

Those are the exact characteristics Kansas City's receivers lack. For a third-round pick, Dotson could've become the Chiefs' fourth or even third-best receiver from day one, especially considering the uncertainty around Hollywood Brown's injury.

The organization sounds happy with the room, yet it's hard to ignore what the ceiling could've been with a player of Dotson's caliber. After acquiring former first-rounder Kadarius Toney to questionable returns, perhaps the team was incentivized to play it safe.

Hopefully, this won't come back to bite Veach in the end. Missing out on Dotson has to hurt nonetheless.
