The Chiefs seemed close to signing WR Zay Jones after he visited with Kansas City this week, but the former second-round pick has agreed with the Arizona Cardinals instead.

For Jones, he has a clearer path to playing time with the Cardinals. They just drafted Marvin Harrison Jr., though the only established receivers otherwise are Michael Wilson and Greg Dortch. Meanwhile, Jones would've been near the end of the depth chart in Kansas City pending a potential suspension for Rashee Rice.

Nonetheless, it's disappointing for the Chiefs and their options for insurance are running thin.

Chiefs News: WR Zay Jones Signs With Cardinals

With limited remaining options in free agency, the organization may need to look for a trade if they want to improve the wide receiver position. Treylon Burks could be available, though the Titans seem disinterested in trading the 2022 first-round pick.

Jones struggled with injuries in 2023 but caught 82 passes for 823 yards and five TDs with Jacksonville the year prior. He can still provide value, especially in the red zone, and would've filled a nice role for the Chiefs.

Brett Veach has difficult decisions to make. As things stand, Hollywood Brown, Xavier Worthy, Skyy Moore, Kadarius Toney, and Justin Watson make up the depth chart while we wait to see what happens with Rice. That's a solid receiving room, though it's full of players who have injury histories or inconsistent production.

Travis Kelce is still the No. 1 receiving option overall and I believe in Isiah Pacheco's ability to contribute in the passing game too. Even still, getting Jones would've made me feel a lot better about the Chiefs overall.

Kansas City is still an overwhelming favorite to win the AFC, so I'm nitpicking here, but this could be another frustrating season offensively unless someone takes a step forward.
