Chiefs Take Big Step Toward Signing Top Remaining Free Agent WR

As the Kansas City Chiefs try to find a solution to their Rashee Rice problem, they are desperately scouring the free-agent market for a suitable replacement. If their star wide receiver is suspended for at least half the season as some predict, the Chiefs will be short-handed in the playmaker department for next season, despite the additions of Hollywood Brown and rookie Xavier Worthy.

Unfortunately for the Chiefs, there aren't too many high-end options still available on the market. Naturally, elite pass-catchers don't last until after the draft. However, there are still a few receivers who could be solid depth options and start while Rice is suspended.

One of those is the former Raiders and Jaguars wide receiver Zay Jones. According to the latest reporting by Adam Schefter, the 29-year-old WR will visit with the Chiefs on Thursday.

Jones has already visited the Titans, Cardinals, and the Cowboys. However, the Chiefs offer him a rare opportunity to be a big part of the offense while contending for the Super Bowl.

After being released by the Jaguars where he spent the last two seasons, Jones became one of the most sought-after free agents on the market.

Jones first burst onto the scene during his senior year at East Carolina. With 158 receptions for the season, he broke the all-time single-season record for NCAA Division I football. This earned him a second-round selection by the Buffalo Bills in the 2017 NFL Draft.

In the 2022 offseason, Jones signed a three-year, $24 million deal with the Jaguars. As recently as 2022, he posted 82 catches, 823 yards, and five touchdowns.

If he can rediscover a semblance of that 2022 form, he could be a very intriguing piece for the Chiefs. With his 6-foot-2, 200-lbs frame, he has the ability to be a reliable red-zone threat for Patrick Mahomes.

Jones didn't turn out to be the dominant receiver some were hoping he would become, but at this stage of the offseason, the Chiefs can't do much better than him as Rashee Rice insurance.
