The Chiefs officially placed star WR Rashee Rice on injured reserve on Thursday, meaning he'll miss at least four games.

It's not a surprising move considering the seemingly devastating knee injury he suffered against the Chargers in Week 4, though it's still disappointing given the recent optimism that he may not have a torn ACL as initially feared.

Andy Reid told reporters that they're waiting for his swelling to go down to conduct tests next week, noting there's no greater optimism than before at this point.

Chiefs Place WR Rashee Rice on Injured Reserve

Considering how bad the injury looked, it would've been a shock if Rice could come back within four games anyway. He'll now have at least five weeks for the organization to evaluate things, though there's still an overwhelming possibility that he could be out for the entire season.

The Chiefs say they'll know more on Monday, the same day they take on the Saints on Monday Night Football. They'll have a bye in Week 6 before a series of competitive games against the 49ers, Raiders, Buccaneers, and Broncos.

All we have is speculation at this point, creating a sense of unease among fans. Rice emerged as Patrick Mahomes' favorite target through three weeks, showcasing his dynamic ability with the ball in his hands as one of the best young players in the league.

A corresponding move is expected though has not yet been announced. Some names are being floated as trade targets but Kansas City's willingness to make a deal largely depends on Rice's ultimate diagnosis.

All options are on the table and this is an unfortunate step toward a long recovery for the second-year wideout.
