Chief Who's Racked Up Recent Absences Finally Returns to Practice
By Joe Summers
Chiefs RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire returned to practice on Monday, a big step in the right direction as the veteran tries to prepare for the NFL season despite his ongoing battle with PTSD.
Edwards-Helaire figures to be an important part of the offense entering his fifth season. He's missed a substantial amount of practice time this summer, so it's an encouraging sign that he's back on the field with a critical Week 1 matchup against the Ravens quickly approaching.
It's not yet clear whether Edwards-Helaire's symptoms will be a consistent issue throughout the regular season. Andy Reid has been open that the organization is learning as it goes, and it's a positive development that the former first-round pick is practicing.
Chiefs RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire Returns to Practice
Undrafted rookie Carson Steele won over Chiefs Kingdom with his incredible preseason, but Edwards-Helaire remains the backup behind Isiah Pacheco provided he's able to play.
During the 2023 season, Edwards-Helaire compiled 411 yards from scrimmage and a pair of TDs. Those numbers don't sound like much, yet he stepped in for Pacheco down the stretch when Pacheco suffered an injury.
The coaching staff trusts Edwards-Helaire, so he's firmly ahead of Steele on the depth chart. Given the importance of this season, he's a more valuable player than most fans realize.
There's still much to learn about how Edwards-Helaire's playing time could be impacted throughout the season. Steele may play a significant role should Edwards-Helaire miss time. However, it appears the veteran is on track to play in Week 1.
