Undrafted Chiefs Rookie Making Strong Push for Roster Spot
By Joe Summers
One undrafted Chiefs rookie enjoyed an excellent week of practice at training camp, turning heads and making a strong, sudden case that he should be in heavy consideration for a spot on the final 53-man roster.
UCLA RB Carson Steele is making a name for himself with a level of physicality that could see him bring back the fullback role while also serving as a rusher and pass-catcher.
It's more likely than not that Steele doesn't make the cut, though it's becoming a much more difficult decision by the day.
Undrafted RB Carson Steele Pushing for Chiefs Roster Spot
At six-foot and 228 pounds, Steele is a bruiser who compiled 1,556 rushing yards and 14 TDs as a sophomore at Ball State before transferring to UCLA. He's flashed receiving skills and would immediately become one of the Chiefs' better blockers at the position, giving him some additional value due to his versatility.
Isiah Pacheco, Clyde Edwards-Helaire, and seemingly Deneric Prince are all firmly ahead on the depth chart. Even still, Steele is putting himself in a great position.
From a pure production standpoint, almost no rookie running back can match Steele's 3,780 yards from scrimmage and 30 TDs over three seasons. He was outrageously productive as a workhorse and as Andy Reid pointed out, he's doing all he can to make the team.
Steele's surge gives the organization the ideal problem. Too many quality players are standing out at camp and difficult decisions need to be made. While Steele might be on the chopping block, he's earning fans and would likely be a priority practice squad prospect if he does ultimately get cut.
Chiefs Kingdom just recently saw Pacheco utilize a fantastic training camp to become a featured starter. Whether or not that's in Steele's future remains to be seen. Either way, he has to be thrilled about the week he's had.
