The Broncos have had a rough last several years and are trying to turn back into a playoff contender under Sean Payton. While some of their offseason decisions deserve plenty of criticism, Denver made a surprisingly impressive move by hiring former Stanford head coach David Shaw as a senior personnel executive.

Shaw previously worked with Payton on the Philadelphia Eagles' staff in 1997. This is the first time Shaw will be in the NFL since 2005, but he has an excellent track record as an assistant and building contenders during his time at Stanford.

It's not often you can say this, but well done, Broncos.

Broncos Hire Former Stanford HC David Shaw

Shaw led Stanford from 2011-2022, winning Pac-12 Coach of the Year a conference-record four times. He's the winningest coach in school history and now hopes to help rebuild Denver in similar fashion.

I'm skeptical about the Broncos' outlook, especially considering some of the reports we're hearing out of summer workouts. Nonetheless, this is a step in the right direction.

During his time in the NFL, Shaw had stints with the Eagles, Raiders, and Ravens. He likely won't have a huge impact on Denver's long-term prospects and I'm not a believer in Bo Nix. After all, a dash of spice won't make spoiled meat fresh.

Yet I still like the move. The Broncos aren't real competition anyway, even if they beat the Chiefs last year and snapped their losing streak in the series. Kansas City still reigns and has its eyes set on completing the all-elusive three-peat.
