AI Projected the Chiefs' 53-Man Roster (And it Included a Hilarious Cut)
By Joe Summers
The eventual artificial intelligence (AI) takeover of everything we hold near and dear seems like a foregone conclusion at this point, so surely the computer overlords could accurately predict the Chiefs' 53-man roster, right?
Not exactly. We input Kansas City's projected depth chart into ChatGPT and prompted the program to project the final roster. The results did not disappoint.
Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce are safe in this experiment. However, the AI's projection still included at least one hilarious cut. Luckily, I don't think ChatGPT is coming for Brett Veach or Andy Reid's jobs anytime soon.
AI 53-Man Chiefs Roster Projection
Quarterbacks (2)
- Patrick Mahomes
- Carson Wentz
No big surprises here. Chris Oladokun could push for a spot in theory but spent 2023 on the practice squad. Reid typically only carries a pair of QBs, so Mahomes and Wentz are a logical start for the program.
Running Backs (4)
- Isiah Pacheco
- Clyde Edwards-Helaire
- Deneric Prince
- Keontay Ingram
Ingram making the roster would qualify as a surprise. Pacheco and Edwards-Helaire are locks, while Prince appears to be the leader in the clubhouse for the third spot in the rotation.
It's possible that an undrafted rookie like Carson Steele winds up making the roster too. Ingram hasn't received much training camp buzz thus far and keeping four running backs would mean another position loses a spot. Given the heavy competition at other marquee positions, Ingram likely won't be part of the final 53-man group.
Wide Receiver (6)
- Skyy Moore
- Rashee Rice
- Kadarius Toney
- Justyn Ross
- Hollywood Brown
- Justin Watson
In what would be the most surprising roster move of the Brett Veach/Andy Reid era, ChatGPT projects first-round pick Xavier Worthy to get cut.
There is a 0% chance of that happening. It's hilarious to think about regardless, especially considering the projection has Skyy Moore, Kadarius Toney, and Justyn Ross all on the roster. Worthy and even Nikko Remigio are ahead of Ross in the pecking order, despite a strong Thursday practice from Ross.
Mecole Hardman was left off this list, though appears as a return man in ChatGPT's projection.
It feels likely the Chiefs will keep additional receivers at the expense of a fourth running back. AI still has a long way to go in evaluating pass-catchers apparently.
Tight End (3)
- Travis Kelce
- Noah Gray
- Jared Wiley
This feels right. Irv Smith Jr. seemed like a logical cut candidate once Kansas City drafted Wiley in the fourth round.
Barring a surprise, these three tight ends should be the ones on the final roster.
Offensive Line (9)
- Wanya Morris
- Kingsley Suamataia
- Joe Thuney
- Mike Caliendo
- Creed Humphrey
- Trey Smith
- Jawaan Taylor
- Lucas Niang
- Nick Torres
Most of these feel accurate. Fifth-round rookie Hunter Nourzad will make the roster, likely at Torres' expense. Nourzad can play multiple positions along the line and his versatility was a big reason the Chiefs wanted him in the first place.
Otherwise, ChatGPT did a solid job here.
Defensive Line (9)
- George Karlaftis
- Felix Anudike-Uzomah
- Chris Jones
- Derrick Nnadi
- Tershawn Whartson
- Mike Danna
- Charles Omenihu
- Matt Dickerson
- BJ Thompson
Thompson's status is tricky after the scary cardiac arrest event he experienced during a team meeting earlier this summer.
Aside from that, the defensive line is fairly straightforward.
Linebackers (6)
- Drue Tranquill
- Nick Bolton
- Leo Chenal
- Jack Cochrane
- Cole Christiansen
- Cam Jones
The only name to watch here is Cole Christiansen. Tranquill, Bolton, and Chenal are the starters. Cochrane and Jones are both strong backups whom defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo has praised, but Christiansen is the wild card.
He's been a practice squad player the last couple of seasons. With Willie Gay Jr. now gone to the Saints, there's an open spot that Christiansen is battling for.
Cornerbacks (6)
- Trent McDuffie
- Joshua Williams
- Jaylen Watson
- Nazeeh Johnson
- Chamarri Conner
- Nic Jones
Kelvin Joseph's omission is an understandable one given the relative lack of hype around the former first-round pick. That being said, he's a virtual lock to make the roster.
He's worked with the starters throughout training camp and is the favorite to replace L'Jarius Sneed alongside Trent McDuffie. Joseph will be on the roster instead of either Jones or Christiansen at linebacker.
Sixth-round rookie Kamal Hadden should also find a spot somewhere as a perfect fit in Spagnuolo's defense.
Safeties (4)
- Justin Reid
- Bryan Cook
- Deon Bush
- Jaden Hicks
All four safeties will be on the team. No surprises here, leaving the only question of whether Reid will be fully healthy in time for Week 1 against the Ravens.
Kicker
- Harrison Butker
Punter
- Matt Araiza
Long Snapper
- James Winchester
Kick Returner
- Kadarius Toney
Punt Returner
- Mecole Hardman
It'd be a stunner if Toney handled kick returns considering he's never done that, instead serving as a punt returner when he's played on special teams.
Otherwise, these are the correct final roster projections.
Notable Cuts
Xavier Worthy, Nikko Remigio, Louis Rees-Zammit, Hunter Nourzad, Mike Pennel, Neil Farrell, Kamal Hadden, and Kelvin Joseph are surprise cuts, though guys like Rees-Zammit and Farrell aren't considered locks anyway.
All in all, ChatGPT provided a reasonable roster projection, though thankfully the Chiefs' Super Bowl hopes aren't resting on AI's ability to properly evaluate talent.
Fear not, Xavier Worthy, you're probably going to be on the 53-man roster.
