5 Chiefs Andy Reid Could Outlast After Contract Extension
By Joe Summers
4. Clyde Edwards-Helaire - RB
The first draft pick Brett Veach ever made, Clyde Edwards-Helaire's career has been a rollercoaster but he's settled in as a dependable backup running back who can start in a pinch if necessary. He's back on a one-year deal, though it's hard to picture him lasting through 2029 with the nature of positional value in the modern NFL.
After a couple of underwhelming, injury-riddled seasons, Edwards-Helaire lost his starting job to Isiah Pacheco but still makes a positive impact when he's on the field. Patrick Mahomes trusts him and he's familiar with the offense, maintaining stability at an important position.
Edwards-Helaire will never prove worth the first-round draft capital spent to acquire him, yet he's an important piece to the offense and gives the coaching staff peace of mind in the event of a Pacheco injury. It's not clear who will ultimately replace him, though I doubt he'll remain a middling backup in Kansas City on one-year deals for the next five years.
He's a dynamic pass catcher who churns out extra yardage, an important quality to keep the offense on schedule.
This might be his final year with the Chiefs, though he's more than earned his place on the roster in the short term.
