3 Royals Who Will Be Replaced by Free Agent Signings
By Joe Summers
We should see many new faces on the Royals next season, as I expect J.J. Picollo and the front office to be active in free agency.
Inevitably, bringing new faces in requires jettisoning old faces out. If the Royals make tangible improvements to the roster, certain players won't be around next year.
What players are on the chopping block? Let's look at three players who are likely to be replaced by free agency signings this offseason.
3 Royals Who Will Be Replaced by Free Agent Signings
1. Brady Singer - SP
Singer has incredible talent but hasn't consistently harnessed his ability. Nonetheless, Singer should have many suitors on the trade market after posting a 3.23 ERA in 2022.
My expectation is that the Royals will trade Singer to capitalize on his value and then sign a free-agent pitcher to replace the former first-round draft pick in the rotation.
Is it possible that Kansas City holds onto Singer and he blossoms into a reliable mid-rotation starter? Absolutely. However, the Royals were in conversations to trade Singer at the deadline this season and I think they'll follow through on that possibility now.
Singer closed the year on a high note and teams should be optimistic about him returning to that dominant 2022 form. His 3.30 xFIP (Expected Fielding Independent Pitching) was one of the best marks in the league and he's shown a competitive fire that teams will love.
I'd hate to lose Singer, but these are the kinds of decisions a rebuilding team has to make.
Trading Singer away won't be the only decision that hurts, as you'll see on the next page.
