Perfect Chiefs Backup QB for 2025 Season Suddenly Becomes Available
By Joe Summers
The Chiefs are dealing with a major issue at QB following Patrick Mahomes' surprise injury and while it appears that the ailment may not keep him out of Saturday's contest against the Texans, it serves as a reminder that Kansas City needs to ensure it always has a capable backup.
Carson Wentz is ready to roll if necessary but is a free agent next offseason. Should he look for a larger opportunity elsewhere, one recently retired QB just announced he's making an NFL comeback.
Teddy Bridgewater, who was selected in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft and is beloved across the league, revealed on Tuesday that he wants to play for a team next year.
Chiefs Should Pursue Returning Teddy Bridgewater as 2025 Backup QB
In an appearance with Tom Pelissero and Ian Rapoport on NFL Network, Bridgewater declared his intention to sign with a team this offseason. He spent 2024 coaching his alma mater, Miami Northwestern High School, to a state championship in Florida.
His immediate success and well-documented history as a great leader would make him a wonderful addition to any locker room. That's why he makes so much sense as a Chiefs target in free agency.
Kansas City has an excellent culture and the best coach in the NFL in Andy Reid. He won't be around forever, so it's logical to start developing young coaches who could ultimately take over. Not to suggest that Bridgewater would be ready to be Reid's successor, though it's easy to imagine him ultimately being ready for a big assistant role once the legendary coach retires.
In the short term, Bridgewater is an overqualified backup. He's completed 66.4% of his career passes for 15,120 yards with 75 TDs to 47 interceptions, amassing a 33-32 record as a starter. The ex-Louisville star made a dramatic comeback after a devastating 2018 knee injury that nearly saw his leg amputated, returning to be a productive player.
Perhaps Wentz will sign another contract and remain the Chiefs' backup. If he yearns for greener pastures, Bridgewater should be heavily considered to join the future three-time defending Super Bowl champions.
