Former Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy was hoping that this offseason’s coaching carousel would be fruitful for him. At one point, there were 10 head coaching jobs open and several offensive coordinator roles available.
For an experienced coach like Nagy, it seemed like the odds were in his favor to at least come away with an offensive coordinator job, especially if being head coach wasn’t in the cards. Chiefs head coach Andy Reid told reporters this past week that he knew before the 2025 season that Nagy wanted the “opportunity to have his own show.”
And in one respect, you can’t blame Nagy for feeling that way, as he was a head coach with the Chicago Bears and had some success. However, his tenure as the Chiefs’ offensive coordinator did not go well over these last two years, and it appears the rest of the NFL took notice.
Matt Nagy Likely Full of Chiefs Regret Now as Job Search Backfires
Kevin Stefanski quickly received his next head coaching opportunity with the Atlanta Falcons. Meanwhile, other teams such as the Buffalo Bills (Joe Brady), Arizona Cardinals (Mike LaFleur), and Las Vegas Raiders (Klint Kubiak) went with first-time head coaches.
It's been reported that Nagy interviewed with the Cardinals and Baltimore Ravens about their head coaching vacancies. He also spoke with the Philadelphia Eagles for their offensive coordinator job.
The Eagles seemed like a good opportunity for Nagy on paper, especially with the team not having success with a first-time playcaller in Kevin Patullo. However, Nagy couldn’t get that job, which was another telltale sign of his outlook.
Instead, Philadelphia went with Green Bay Packers QBs coach Sean Mannion to become their new offensive coordinator, and then hired former Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Josh Grizzard as passing game coordinator.
And when it comes to the two teams he interviewed with for head coaching jobs, the Cardinals won’t go with Nagy as their OC since LaFleur is an offensive-minded coach and would imagine that he would call the plays. The Ravens have their OC in Declan Doyle, who spent this season with Ben Johnson.
With Nagy likely not getting a job this coaching cycle, he might regret leaving K.C., especially with how the offense performed in 2025. His unit didn’t put out anything great on film, which is a direct reflection of him and Reid to a certain extent.
However, Chiefs fans aren’t complaining about Nagy leaving, as it allowed for Eric Bieniemy to return and take his spot. Based on Bieniemy’s comments, the Chiefs’ offense should already be in better shape in 2026.
Nonetheless, one wonders what is next for Nagy. With lowly teams like the New York Giants and New York Jets not even bringing him in for OC interviews, it calls into question what his NFL coaching future will look like.
If he even has much of one remaining, that is.
