The Kansas City Chiefs have made it clear they don't plan to retain former offensive coordinator Matt Nagy, who, oddly, was generating interest for head coaching roles. There was a level of concern among the fan base that if Nagy didn't land a head coaching role, Andy Reid would opt to bring the veteran coach back for the 2026 season. An issue that has been addressed with the report that former Kansas City OC Eric Bieniemy is expected to return to the role. Now, the offseason is looking increasingly bleak for Nagy, who just lost out on the Tennessee Titans' head coaching opportunity.
ESPN's Turron Davenport reported that "Titans GM Mike Borgonzi ultimately made the decision to hire Robert Saleh. Monday's visit swayed the decision in Saleh's favor. Saleh impressed Borgonzi and the group enough to conclude he was the best candidate for the job."
Tennessee was the only open job that Nagy appeared to have the inside track for, leaving the coach in limbo with the Chiefs already moving in a different direction.
For Nagy, it is past time for a change to be made as the Chiefs' points per game average dropped drastically after Bieniemy's departure. Nagy was never able to get his offense to score more than 23 points consistently and left every reason for fans to want a reunion with their former OC. Even with Andy Reid calling the plays, fans can't help but blame Nagy after seeing the difference in the offense over the past three seasons.
Former Chiefs OC Matt Nagy Left in Clear Trouble After Titans Hire Robert Saleh
Nagy is likely going to be reduced to landing another offensive coordinator role and be forced to prove himself all over again. The Arizona Cardinals head coach opening is the only remaining job Nagy's name has been attached to. Pointing to the fact that Nagy is either going to be forced into a tough situation in Arizona or, more likely, reduced to coaching a lesser offense in a coordinator position.
It is hard to believe the coach can find a better scenario than coaching Patrick Mahomes and working under Andy Reid. This makes it clear that losing out on the head coach role with the Titans not only failed to move Nagy's career forward, but is likely going to push it backwards.
Something that Chiefs fans can't help but understand after the last season of offensive frustration. Reid bears some culpability here as well, but considering the accomplishments of the head coach and what the offense has looked like under his leadership previously, it is hard to assign much blame. It seems that the change at OC is what upset things for Kansas City, and that has now been righted with Nagy's departure and the expected addition of Bieniemy.
The Chiefs made the right decision and have left fans with reasons to hope that the offseason ahead will continue to be defined with meaningful changes. Leaving Nagy in the midst of a complete mess of an offseason, one that appears to have forced the coach backwards, with the coordinator being forced into an offensive situation with a lesser quarterback needing to prove himself all over again.
