The Chiefs have tried several experiments throughout the years, including when they brought in former rugby star Louis Rees-Zammit during the 2024 offseason. With the NFL switching to a new kickoff format, Kansas City hoped the Welsh stud could develop into a key special teams contributor.
After an unremarkable preseason performance, the Chiefs waived Rees-Zammit before the 2024 campaign began. The ex-International Player Pathway Program participant quickly signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars following his release, yet he didn't play a single snap for them.
The lack of playing time didn't stop the Jaguars from re-signing Rees-Zammit to the active roster in February. Unfortunately, the 24-year-old dual-threat has since been knocked down a peg.
On Wednesday, the Jaguars announced that Rees-Zammit has officially been demoted from the active roster and will return to exempt/international player status.

Jaguars Demote Former Chiefs RB/WR Louis Rees-Zammit Back to Exempt/International Player
For those unfamiliar with the term, all NFL teams are allowed to use an international roster spot on a player who's a part of the international pathway program. The tool helps teams expand their practice squads from 16 players to 17 during the preseason, however, the position ceases to exist once 53-man rosters are finalized.
Rees-Zammit's demotion likely has to do with the Jaguars signing two undrafted receivers in BYU's Darius Lassiter and Utah's Dorian Singer. The receiving duo are potential practice squad candidates if they impress Jacksonville's coaching staff, resulting in the Jags reverting the ex-Chiefs gadget player to international status to make room.
Only time will tell if the 6-foot-2, 209-pound RB/WR can impress the Jaguars more than he did the Chiefs. Rees-Zammit didn't make much of an impact during Kansas City's 2024 preseason, tallying 22 rushing yards on six carries and a three-yard catch while also returning two kickoffs for 63 yards along the way.
Successfully proving he belongs on Jacksonville's roster would put Rees-Zammit on a collision course with his former team. The Jaguars are already confirmed to be one of the Chiefs' 2025 road opponents, leaving it up to the NFL to reveal exactly when that encounter will happen.
For now, the Chiefs will continue the offseason, holding the fourth-best Super Bowl 60 odds (+800) on FanDuel Sportsbook while Rees-Zammit fights to prove he belongs with one of the AFC's bottom-feeders.
