The Kansas City Chiefs aren't the only AFC West team in need of receiving help. The rival Los Angeles Chargers have done little to provide much receiving help around star quarterback Justin Herbert. But perhaps the reason for this is the potential that head coach Jim Harbaugh sees in new offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel's ability to unlock third-year receiver Ladd McConkey.

Drafted 34th overall in the 2024 NFL Draft, McConkey outperformed any expectations put on him in his rookie season. He accounted for nearly 1,200 yards on a 73.2% catch rate and seven touchdowns. He works mainly from the slot and is as shifty as he is smart. However, McConkey suffered a string of small injuries during the 2025 campaign, and despite playing through the ailments, his stats suffered.

McConkey tallied under 800 yards on an abysmal 62.3% catch rate, a whole 10% worse than the year prior. The Chargers offense as a whole underperformed for the year, which is why Harbaugh decided to bring in one of the league's best offensive minds in McDaniel, who most recently was the head coach of the Miami Dolphins. Combine his unique scheme and McConkey's versatility and talent, and the Chargers might not need another proven receiver, potentially outdoing the Chiefs in that department.

In a recent media appearance, McConkey spoke highly of McDaniel's impact on the offense, still so early into the offseason workouts, saying the new OC has already changed the way he thinks about playing receiver and that he's learned to study defensive backs and use their leverage against them at the line of scrimmage.

"Let's really look at it through a defensive perspective," McConkey said. "What's the DB trying to do here? What's his leverage? What's he trying to take away? ... Let's really understand what they're trying to do and take advantage of that."

That's a similar sentiment that Chiefs receivers are taking away from new position coach Chad O'Shea, who has been a notable and commanding voice on the practice field for such a young group that was devoid of that presence for so long. While the Chiefs are also relying on a third-year breakout from first-round pick Xavier Worthy, they are also banking on a big season from Rashee Rice, who is fresh out of jail and will hopefully be healthy come training camp after a cleanup knee surgery.

McConkey taking that next step is certainly possible and will probably make-or-break the final result of a successful Chargers offense. With Kansas City rebooting its secondary, it won't be an easy task to keep McConkey quiet when they face LA in Weeks 6 and 17.
