Chiefs fans given explanation for underwhelming George Karlaftis season

Kansas City's defensive line coach, Joe Cullen, offered some insight on why George Karlaftis's down year had much more to do than a drop in play.

One of the many areas of frustration for the Kansas City Chiefs in the 2025 season was the lack of a consistent pass rush. Part of this was due to a down year from George Karlaftis, with the edge rusher tallying only six sacks after offering eight the year prior, as well as double-digit sacks in 2023. It left fans frustrated with questions as to whether or not the extension was a clear mistake for Kansas City.

A debate that has far more context, with it being revealed this week, he was playing through an injury. NBC's McKenzie Nelson reported more on this offering: "Joe Cullen [Chiefs defensive line coach] says George Karlaftis had a broken hand during the season, his power hand. Had surgery on it during the BYE week." Karlaftis was playing with a clear disadvantage for a KC defensive line that had clear depth concerns both on the interior and when it came to rushing the quarterback off the edge.

These are issues that the franchise worked to address in the offseason, bringing in R Mason Thomas, Peter Woods, and Khyiris Tonga while counting on a year two leap from Ashton Gillotte. With this in mind, it becomes far easier to be optimistic about Kansas City's chances of generating a far more consistent pass rush with Karlaftis as the primary option.

Chiefs given clear explanation for George Karlaftis suffering 2025 regression

Karlaftis's style of play is very reliant on his elite hand-fighting ability, and this goes a long way in explaining why there wasn't as much production as expected a season ago. The franchise has every reason to expect this to change with the defender now healthy and having a bit of reinforcement along the defensive line.

It should be noted as well that the addition of Kenneth Walker III and an improved Chiefs running game should allow the KC pass rush to stay fresher, deeper into games, and pile up numbers a bit more consistently. The offensive struggles of recent seasons have left Kansas City's defense constantly under fire and expected to do much of the heavy lifting due to limited scoring.

Adding Walker and offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy's return should help to eliminate this struggle. No question, Karlaftis should be set up to bounce back with double-digit sacks once again, a realistic expectation with the most recent update.

Working with such a compromised hand had to impact Karlaftis more than many realized and limited what was already an uphill battle of a 2025 season. Expectations should now be moving back in the right direction with Karlaftis being given more help and having a full offseason to return to peak health.
