We're onto the NFL playoffs and failed teams around the league are already planning for the future, scheduling interviews with potential candidates to fill vacant roles after what's known as Black Monday.

Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy is becoming a popular option across league circles. In his fourth year in the position, Nagy is a respected leader and one of the offense's most trusted voices. As a result, the Jets have reportedly requested to interview him to become their head coach.

The Saints had already shown interest in him, and it's becoming increasingly likely that Nagy could earn his second opportunity leading a team.

Jets Request to Interview Chiefs OC Matt Nagy for Head Coach Job

He was the head coach of the Bears from 2018-2021, tasked with overseeing the development of Mitch Trubisky. After leading Chicago to a 12-4 record and playoff berth in his first year, Nagy was named the AP NFL Coach of the Year.

Things unraveled quickly with a pair of disappointing 8-8 seasons before a 6-11 finish in 2021 led to his firing. The Bears are still one of the NFL's worst franchises, while Nagy won consecutive Super Bowls and is a major reason why the Chiefs are among the favorites to win a third straight.

Fans have been frustrated with the offense's performance over the last two years, but it's hard to argue Nagy is at fault for anything. Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid love him, which is a lot more important than what fans who aren't in the building think. He's clearly respected around the league too, signaling it's only a matter of time before he gets another chance somewhere.

Should Nagy ultimately get hired elsewhere, someone like the just-fired Doug Pederson could be an option to replace him. There's a long way to go before Kansas City needs to cross that bridge though, and for now, the entire organization is fully focused on the playoffs in an effort to rewrite the history books.

Nagy deserves to interview for as many teams as will have him, but the Chiefs would clearly prefer to keep him in the building.
