Former Chiefs Coach Kicked to Curb by AFC Laughingstock After Disastrous Season
By Joe Summers
It's Black Monday in the NFL as the regular season is over and teams are making personnel decisions across the league. One underwhelming coach, former Chiefs offensive coordinator Doug Pederson, was among the casualties to start the week.
The Jacksonville Jaguars officially fired Pederson after a bitterly disappointing 4-13 campaign that's left the organization desperate for answers. It concludes a three-year tenure for the talented play-caller that saw Jacksonville go 22-29 overall with one playoff appearance, ultimately losing to Kansas City in the Divisional Round after the 2022 season.
Pederson has a 64-66-1 career coaching record including his time with the Eagles, during which he also won a Super Bowl. It's not yet clear what's next for Pederson, though he could be an option to re-join Andy Reid's staff should Matt Nagy land a head coaching job in the coming months.
Former Chiefs OC Doug Pederson Fired by Jaguars
He led the Chiefs' offense from 2013-2015, captaining a top-10 offense twice despite some of the limitations involved with Alex Smith being under center. Pederson is a respected coach with a long history working with Reid, though he's now worn out his welcome at two different franchises when left to his own devices.
The problems with Jacksonville are far more significant than just Pederson. General manager Trent Baalke has a long track record of failed rosters, Trevor Lawrence has seemingly regressed after signing a mammoth extension, and the ownership has done little to suggest competence.
Even still, Pederson was part of the problem. He was occasionally combative with the media and did himself no favors, though firing him isn't going to magically fix what's wrong with the Jaguars.
Pederson will likely take some time to evaluate his options before finding his new home. He took a full year off from coaching after the Eagles fired him and perhaps a similar hiatus remains a possibility this time around. Should the Chiefs wind up looking for a new offensive coordinator though, Pederson could be one of Reid's first calls.
