Big Threat to Steal Key Chief From KC After Super Bowl Revealed
Super Bowl 59 is nearly upon us and Kansas City is buzzing with excitement. The Chiefs will be gunning for a third consecutive Lombardi Trophy when they meet the Philadelphia Eagles in New Orleans in just over a week, marking what could be several players' final game with the franchise.
After all, it won't be long before free agency begins once the Super Bowl festivities are over. Free agency begins on March 12, meaning Chiefs general manager Brett Veach will soon be hard at work deciding what to do with the team's 20 upcoming unrestricted free agents.
With about $16.2 million in available cap space this offseason, per Spotrac, the Chiefs might be forced to say farewell to a handful of key names — including one of their most important offensive line pieces.
Chiefs Rumors: Bears Projected to Target OG Trey Smith in Free Agency
ESPN's Matt Bowen shared his latest 2025 free agency rankings on Wednesday, and Chiefs offensive guard Trey Smith clocks in at the No. 2 spot. NFL insider Jeremy Fowler then chimed in that he wouldn't be surprised if the Chicago Bears attempted to sign the reliable veteran blocker.
"Some inside the league are watching Chicago here," Fowler wrote. "General manager Ryan Poles, who needs to drastically improve his interior offensive line for new coach Ben Johnson, was in Kansas City when the Chiefs drafted Smith."
Smith, 25, has been a starter for the Chiefs ever since he was drafted 226th overall in 2021. The former Tennessee Volunteer has exceeded all expectations with each passing year, culminating with his first-ever Pro Bowl nod this season.
The Chiefs' offensive line wouldn't be as strong as it is without the 6-foot-6 blocker's reliable play. Suiting up in all 17 regular-season contents, Smith played to an impressive 77.4 run block grade on Pro Football Focus — 10th-best among 73 eligible guards. That's without mentioning how he was an effective pass blocker, allowing a career-low 31 pressures.
According to Spotrac, Smith's projected market value sits at $19.7 million annually. Although that's too big of a number for the Chiefs to absorb given their current cap situation, the Bears's $67.3 million in available spaces gives them more than enough room to sign the two-time Super Bowl Champion.
In other words, Kansas City fans should appreciate Smith as much as they can during the Super Bowl. It might be his final outing as a Chief, after all.
More about Smith's future with the Chiefs will be known as we get closer to the NFL free agency, which opens on Wednesday, March 12.
