The Kansas City Chiefs are dealing with yet another setback when it comes to star receiver Rashee Rice. Yet another bad off-the-field decision from Rice resulted in prison time that will cause the receiver to miss a portion of the team's summer program, and left little question that an extension isn't in the pass catcher's future. With this in mind, there has never been a better time for the Chiefs to make one final offseason move.
Adding to the receiver position prior to the latest Rice setback was already a consideration. Now, there is simply no viable argument against it as the franchise has every reason to seek out a more reliable option, starting with a familiar face that would help boost the offense at the start of the 2026 season.
Chiefs need to add a veteran receiver now more than ever
1. Tyreek Hill
Hill could immediately step in from day one and establish relationships and chemistry that clearly offer a great deal of upside. However, the only potential issue here is the fact that Hill does have a history of making it clear he wants the football and employed questionable on-field actions during his time with Miami. Still, if there is one team perfectly suited to temper these potential concerns, it is the Chiefs.
Kansas City would add an explosive weapon that already has a great deal of chemistry with Mahomes. It makes sense and gives you a chance to take pressure off the current depth chart that comes with questions beyond just Rice. Even as recently as the 2024 season, Hill has offered elite production, giving KC every reason to consider the potential signing.
2. Keenan Allen
If Kansas City is sold on Rice coming back for one more season and still has belief in the receiver's ability, this move makes far more sense. Allen can serve as a consistent secondary option, finishing both of the last two seasons well over 700 receiving yards. You're not blocking the production of Xavier Worthy or Rice, while adding a capable veteran able to step in if either player is unable to live up to expectations.
Signing Allen makes sense if the Chiefs want to bring in security without adding expectations. If you sign Hill or one of the top remaining players, you're bringing in a piece capable of changing your offense for the better, but with obvious strings.
3. Stefon Diggs
Next up is Stefon Diggs, who has already been a potential speculated target for the Chiefs. The upside is obvious with the pass-catcher just finishing a season helping the New England Patriots make the Super Bowl while offering over 1,000 receiving yards and four touchdowns. There is a clear ability to be a primary option or an elite secondary weapon if Rice or Worthy were to take the next step in their careers.
For Diggs, the reasons to join the Chiefs are obvious, with the franchise offering a chance at serious contention. There is also the fun side story of adding the former Bills receiver, who was consistently on the wrong side of the rivalry. No question, if the Chiefs want a primary option, Diggs is the safest bet.
4. Deebo Samuel
This is clearly the least interesting fit of the aforementioned options based on injury concerns and age. Samuel has a lot of wear-and-tear that led the Washington Commanders to deem the receiver as no longer worth the high cap hit. For Samuel, there are questions about what level the 30-year-old can reach after spending even his early seasons in the league dealing with injuries.
Still, there is no denying the temptation of adding a player who has been as dynamic in seasons past as Samuel has been. The receiver can line up all over the field and give Reid's offense a fun wrinkle capable of taking pressure off the current receiver depth chart, even if the veteran does come with questions of his own.
