Ever since Tyreek Hill's departure from Arrowhead Stadium, Kansas City Chiefs fans and analysts have teased a potential reunion. And now that his days with the Miami Dolphins are officially over, that might actually be a realistic possibility.
The fact that the Chiefs didn't add any wide receiver until day three of the 2026 NFL Draft was somewhat surprising. They haven't traded for anyone, either, prompting many to want a free-agency splash at the position.
That makes people think that the ground is laid for a Hill homecoming. It makes sense to a degree, but the Chiefs shouldn't be bending over backwards to get him home. If anything, Hill has to give them a hometown discount.
The Chiefs Can't Afford to Pay Tyreek Hill's Projected Value
Spotrac projects Hill's market value at $15.1 million a year. According to Over The Cap, the Chiefs have roughly $6 million in available cap space, and even though there are always ways to move around the numbers, this wouldn't make much sense for the team.
For starters, the Chiefs traded Hill because they didn't want to give him a big contract extension. Also, he refused to rework his contract, so he might not necessarily be happy with the idea of leaving money on the table to return home. That said, it might be his only chance.
Of course, the Chiefs could use another playmaker on offense, and Hill was a fan favorite and one of the deadliest offensive weapons in the league. However, he's coming off a major injury, and there's no guarantee he'll even be the same player once he's back. He also comes with plenty of distractions off the field, and that's something the Chiefs don't need at the moment.
The Chiefs' wide receiver corps could use a boost. Rashee Rice has yet to prove that he can stay healthy and out of trouble, and Xavier Worthy is dangerously entering potential bust territory. Tyquan Thornton showed promise as a big-play specialist, but he's a WR3 at best right now.
The Chiefs should welcome Hill with open arms if he does want to come back, but only if the price makes sense. Otherwise, it'll be up to another desperate team to meet his financial demands, or he might have to wait until someone gets hurt for a contender to give him a chance to prove that he's still got something left in the tank.
