Chiefs giving Rashee Rice extension would be franchise malpractice after latest blunder

It's time to move on.

Once again, Rashee Rice won't be available for the Kansas City Chiefs when they need him. The star wide receiver's poor decision-making has come back to haunt him again, and this may have been the straw that broke the camel's back.

As reported by Addi Weakley of KSHB, the SMU product will have to serve 30 days of jail time after testing positive for marijuana. That was a violation of his probation stemming from his plea agreement in the infamous 2024 multi-car crash:

"In a filing on Tuesday, May 19, the Dallas County court ordered Rice to serve 30 days in jail for violating probation by testing positive for THC," Weakley wrote. "The document states he will be released on June 16. That time frame conflicts with the dates the Chiefs have released for OTA offseason workouts (May 26-28 and June 1-3) and mandatory minicamp (June 9-11)."

It's been long overdue for the Chiefs to move on from Rashee Rice

Enough is enough. Rice is very talented and should be the team's primary threat, but clearly, he cannot be trusted. Who's to say he won't get himself into trouble again just before the start of the playoffs or a crucial game?

Even worse, how do the Chiefs know things won't get even worse once he gets generational wealth with a long-term, big-money deal? He's not putting his career and his life first now that he's in the spotlight, so he may not carry himself any better once he secures a big payday.

On paper, Rice can be a star. However, he's only shown flashes. Injuries and his suspension have kept him off the field more often than not, and while projections are encouraging, they are meaningless if he doesn't prove that on the field.

The Chiefs are entering a crucial season. This will most likely be Travis Kelce's farewell tour, and they'll look to return to the mountaintop after finishing the year with a losing record for the first time in the Patrick Mahomes era.

They need players who are fully committed and pushing together toward a common goal, and Rice, unfortunately, isn't that guy. Otherwise, he would've at least made sure to stay out of trouble for a little longer.

It's unfortunate to watch promising players derail their careers and hurt their teams through poor decisions. Still, there are more than enough examples proving why sticking with Rice would be a terrible idea.

There aren't many options left in free agency, and the Chiefs might regret not taking a wide receiver early in the 2026 NFL Draft. That said, they can't afford to be held hostage by Rice's poor decisions, and they should be active in the trade market to find some insurance.
