Don’t be shocked if KC Chiefs draft a quarterback in 2021 NFL Draft
The KC Chiefs are set at quarterback, but there’s still a chance they could address the position in the 2021 NFL Draft.
Patrick Mahomes is the starting quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs for at least the next decade. No one is going to even attempt to debate that in Kansas City or around the rest of the league because it’d be stupid to.
That being said, it’s important for the Chiefs to ensure that Mahomes has a solid backup and while Chad Henne is still under contract for 2021, he’ll be a free agent after that. Henne, who turns 36 in July, has been a serviceable backup for the Chiefs but now that Mahomes is signed to a long-term deal, Brett Veach might turn to the draft to find the team’s next QB2.
The KC Chiefs could address the quarterback position late in the 2021 NFL Draft.

This doesn’t mean that Kansas City will spend a high draft pick on a signal-caller because that’d be wasting a pick. Instead, maybe they take a seventh-round flier on a guy like Peyton Ramsey of Northwestern or Brady White of Memphis (if they’re both still there). They could also wait until the conclusion of the draft and find some decent options who went undrafted (this is the ideal route, as they wouldn’t have to use a draft pick on a quarterback).
The Chiefs do have other quarterbacks on their roster outside of Mahomes and Henne who could be backup options moving forward. Jordan Ta’amu was signed last year after a quick stint in the XFL and Anthony Gordon of Washington State is also on the roster. Ta’amu very much fits the kind of player that Andy Reid loves to have but we just don’t know enough about him to know if he’s truly backup quarterback material or not.
Truthfully, I’d rather the Chiefs not spend a draft pick on a quarterback. They only have six selections and have far more important positions to address. If Henne wasn’t still on the roster, then yes, I’d want them to find a backup option at quarterback, but KC has him for one more year and they should take full advantage of that.
In the meantime, they can address positions like linebacker, cornerback, defensive line, offensive line, wide receiver, and tight end before even considering a quarterback. Hopefully, they wait until the draft wraps up to target a potential future backup to Mahomes.
