While the KC Chiefs don’t need a starting tight end, they could use better depth and can use the 2021 NFL Draft as a way to address it. Kenny Yeboah is worth a look.

The Kansas City Chiefs are fortunate to have the best tight end in all of football but they haven’t backed him up with much talent at the position. Last year, the backup tight ends totaled just 99 receiving yards and that was between three different guys (Nick Keizer, Ricky Seals-Jones, and Deon Yelder).

The Chiefs decided to bring Keizer back for 2021 and also re-signed 2019 TE2 Blake Bell, who spent last year with the Dallas Cowboys. Bell is fine, but he’s not a true TE2 and definitely won’t be a part of this team in the distant future.

Bringing Bell in for this season means the Chiefs have bigger needs to address early on in the  2021 NFL Draft but that doesn’t mean they can’t draft a tight end later on. If they do look to add a tight end on Day 3 of the draft, Kenny Yeboah of Ole Miss is someone to keep an eye on.

Kenny Yeboah would provide excellent depth at the tight end position for the KC Chiefs.

More from Chiefs Draft Analysis

Yeboah is a 6’4″, 247 pound tight end who is a threat in the red zone. He caught six touchdown passes last year (his only with Ole Miss — he spent the first four years of his college career at Temple) and also had 524 yards off of 27 receptions. This was through seven games.

Yeboah transferring from Temple to Ole Miss and putting up the best numbers of his college career is impressive too. Sure, his quarterback was better, but he was also facing tougher defenses each week and didn’t seem phased by the increase in competition whatsoever.

Dane Brugler of The Athletic had the Chiefs taking Yeboah in the fifth round of his 2021 NFL Mock Draft (must be subscribed to The Athletic to read the entire article) and as I was looking at his mock, I decided that I really like this pairing.

Yeboah wouldn’t be someone the Chiefs would need to lean on heavily right away, as they have Travis Kelce as their starter and Bell is likely going to serve as the backup. Yeboah could easily pass Keizer on the depth chart (at least one would hope so) and could compete for a bigger role in the 2022 season. If he outperforms Bell as a rookie, then the Chiefs will know they can count on him more the next year.

There’s no harm in drafting a tight end later in the draft. Kelce is still very good but all it takes is one injury to occur to him (knock on wood) for the Chiefs to be depleted at the position. Yeboah isn’t going to be anything close to what Kelce is, but he provides a viable backup tight end, which is something the Chiefs haven’t given Kelce in quite some time.
