KC Chiefs Mock Draft 4.0

Round 6: Pick 207 – Malcolm Koonce, EDGE (Buffalo)

With their final pick in my 2021 NFL Mock Draft, the Kansas City Chiefs add another EDGE in the hopes of improving their pass-rushing unit. KC manages to find a high-quality talent from a smaller school in Malcolm Koonce, who played all four years of his college ball at Buffalo.

More from Chiefs Draft Analysis

Koonce was a pass-rushing machine at Buffalo, totaling 22.5 sacks through four years of action. His best year came as a junior in 2019 when he tallied 11 tackles for loss and eight sacks through 11 games. This past year he played in just six games due to the shortened season but had 6.5 tackles for loss and five sacks.

Yes, the easiest knock on Koonce is that he played in the MAC, so his opponents aren’t as tough, but the numbers speak for themselves. He’s definitely a developmental defender, as most sixth-round picks are, but the Chiefs have made the most of their late-round picks and undrafted free agents.

Most recently, the Chiefs saw heavy contributions from 2020 fifth-rounder Mike Danna and 2020 undrafted free agent Tershawn Wharton, proving they have a knack for finding talent in the later rounds. Koonce could be yet another example of that.

Also, it’s worth noting that Khalil Mack attended Buffalo and he’s done just fine in the NFL. Koonce likely won’t be on Mack’s level, but it’s proof that smaller-school prospects can do big things in the pros.

This mock draft saw the KC Chiefs address their offensive line by taking Jalen Mayfield in the first round. They added to their offensive weapons by drafting a tight end, wide receiver, and running back. Kansas City also drafted a linebacker, a cornerback, and two EDGE rushers to add to their defense.
