Mizzou Football: Unexpected bye could slow momentum after big win

Mizzou football has an extra week to reel from their upset victory over LSU, but could that end up being a bad thing?

The Missouri Tigers were supposed to face Vanderbilt this Saturday, but the game has been postponed due to some positive COVID tests within the Commodores’ program. The game was set to take place in Columbia, but now is tentatively being rescheduled for Dec. 12. This is the first SEC game of the season to have a game postponed due to COVID-19 concerns.

The last time we saw MU take the field, they were knocking off the reigning National Champion LSU Tigers in a high-scoring affair. It was a fun game that went back and forth between the two sides and ultimately, Missouri reigned supreme and handed LSU its second loss of the season.

Mizzou football should be thrilled about that result, but could too much time to think about it actually work against the Tigers?

Missouri was scheduled to have an easy opponent in Vanderbilt this week, which would, in all likelihood, have lifted them to 2-2 on the year (then again, you never know with this program plus Vanderbilt has played them tough in years past). Now, they’ll get their first game back against the ranked Florida Gators, who are coming off their first loss of the season and looking to avenge that loss and prove they’re a top five team.

Missouri has given Florida some trouble since the Tigers joined the SEC, but they were knocked around by the Gators last year, losing 23-6 in Columbia. Of course, it’s a new time with the Tigers, as Eli Drinkwitz has taken over the reins and Connor Bazelak showed last week that he very much can lead this program to a brighter future.

Either way, a bye week is a bye week and while Mizzou has to switch gears and begin game planning for another opponent, they have time to rest up and heal before facing a very good Florida Gators team next week. Hopefully the Tigers have moved on from their big win and now teams know that Missouri isn’t a slouch and to take them seriously, which LSU clearly didn’t do.

It’ll be interesting to see what team shows up in this road game next weekend. Will it be the dominant Mizzou squad that knocked off LSU or will it be the same team that was run over in its first two games?
