The KC Chiefs found their running back of the future in Clyde Edwards-Helaire and as a result, he was considered their best offseason addition.

Russell S. Baxter of FanSided compiled a list of each NFL team’s best offseason addition and for the Kansas City Chiefs, he went with Clyde Edwards-Helaire. The Chiefs selected Edwards-Helaire with the final pick in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft and he’ll immediately come in and push for a starting job.

"The defending Super Bowl champions appear set at every position and used free agency to add a little depth. The club got a big year down the stretch and in the playoffs from Damien Williams. But Andy Reid and company added a spark plug in first-rounder Clyde Edwards-Helaire, who figures to make the offense more dangerous than ever."

The Chiefs were fortunate not to lose a lot of offensive talent this offseason, but there was no debating their need for a more electric running back moving forward. Damien Williams had a nice postseason, but he was far too inconsistent throughout the course of the regular season and has failed to appear in all 16 games at any point during his career.

More from Clyde Edwards-Helaire

While taking a running back in the first round is risky, Edwards-Helaire is worth the risk and can provide the Chiefs with the explosive running back they need. He tallied 1,414 rushing yards and 16 rushing touchdowns while also grabbing 55 receptions for 453 yards and a touchdown during LSU’s National Championship season.

Some might look at the acquisition of Edwards-Helaire as taking the ball out of Patrick Mahomes‘ hands, but the Chiefs were explosive in all offensive facets in 2018 prior to Kareem Hunt getting released. They’ve lacked that dominant running back since Hunt was cut and CEH is going to bring that back to Kansas City.

If the Chiefs need a key first down in the final minutes of a game, they have a guy who can get past the sticks for them. Edwards-Helaire can evade tacklers like none other and will be a huge help in an already stacked offense.

Here is what Baxter said for the other AFC West teams’ best acquisitions:

The other AFC West teams made sure to improve this offseason because they’re not stupid; They know the division belongs to the Kansas City Chiefs unless they can get better and attempt to either keep up with the Chiefs’ offense or somehow slow them down.

Clyde Edwards-Helaire is going to make the 2020 Chiefs that much more explosive.
