Could the KC Chiefs end up regretting their decision to spend their first round selection on a running back this offseason?

Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report compiled a list of what each NFL team’s biggest regret will be from this offseason. As the title indicates, for the Kansas City Chiefs, Knox said their biggest regret is going to be their decision to spend their first round pick on a running back.

The Chiefs used the 32nd overall pick on LSU running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire, who was coming off a National Championship season with the Tigers.

"The Chiefs should not focus on taking the ball out of Mahomes’ hands more, and they already had a Super Bowl-winning backfield with Damien Williams and Darrel Williams in the fold. Adding Edwards-Helaire was purely a luxury move and one that the Chiefs could eventually regret. It would have made more sense for Kansas City to address, say, its 26th-ranked run defense in Round 1 while adding to its backfield later in the draft."

It’s no secret that taking a running back in the first round isn’t as common as it once was. A lot of teams have discovered that it’s pretty easy to find a dynamic running back either late in the draft or in the undrafted free agency pool, so that’s made a lot of teams hesitant when it comes to spending their first round draft choice on the position.

That being said, the Kansas City Chiefs did have a strong need for a running back and they had the final selection in the draft, so it could be argued that the “risk” wasn’t as strong since it was the 32nd overall pick, as opposed to say – the 15th pick.

Yes, there were other positions Kansas City should have looked to address with that pick, but reaching for a player is never the answer. The Chiefs still ended up having a pretty solid draft and the truth is that we don’t know how these players are going to pan out because they haven’t even played an NFL snap yet.

More from Kansas City Chiefs

Edwards-Helaire gives the Chiefs the explosive running back they need and while yes, him running the ball does take the ball out of Patrick Mahomes‘ hands more often, there are times when a few key runs can win a team the game. That’s what the Chiefs were looking for when they added Clyde Edwards-Helaire.

Damien Williams was great in the playoffs, but during the regular season, he was either injured or inconsistent. Darrel Williams was injured in the second half of the season, so him being mentioned in Knox’s blurb was a little puzzling. Edwards-Helaire will easily jump Darrel Williams on the depth chart.
