Will Travis Kelce spend his entire career with Kansas City Chiefs?
The Kansas City Chiefs struck gold when they drafted Travis Kelce in the third round of the 2013 NFL Draft.
Travis Kelce has been sensational for the Kansas City Chiefs and it’s not unfathomable to think that he could spend the entirety of his career as a Chief. Is that a realistic scenario though?
Kelce – a third round pick out of Cincinnati in 2013 – didn’t make much of an impact as a rookie in 2013, but ever since then has been one of the best offensive weapons on the Chiefs offense. Even when Alex Smith was the one under center, Kelce was still one of the best weapons in the league and was arguably THE best tight end.
How much longer could Kelce be with the Kanas City Chiefs?

Kelce signed a big time extension in 2016 that tied him to Kansas City through the 2022 season. So, as of now, he’ll be with the Chiefs until 2022 and it’s hard to see that changing unless he starts to ask for more money (and if he did, could anyone blame him?).
Matt Conner of Arrowhead Addict wrote about how George Kittle‘s potential new deal could benefit Kelce in that it’d increase the tight end market. That could lead Kelce to ask for more money or for the Chiefs to realize what they have in him and do what they can to keep him in Kansas City.
Something that Chiefs fans might not realize, however, is that Kelce is 30 years old and will turn 31 in October. He’s still playing at a peak level and has three more years left on his contract. If he continues to play with the same kind of fire he has been since 2014, then there wouldn’t be any reason to believe that Kelce wouldn’t finish off his career with the Chiefs.
On the flip side, however, if Kelce starts to slow down or starts getting banged up more these next few years, him finishing his career elsewhere might begin to seem like more of a possibility. It’s hard for players to spend their entirety of their career with one team, especially these days with players wanting to play into their late 30s and early 40s.
The good news is that Kelce wants to be a Chief for his entire career. He said that last year prior to the 2019 season (so before the team won a Super Bowl) and the fact that he’s been to the playoffs in all but one season since he’s been in the pros and has had a winning season every year is reason enough to want to stay.
What it’ll ultimately come down to for Kelce and if he remains a forever Chief or not, is the finances. If Kittle gets big time money from the 49ers, Kelce might ask for more dough. He could also think that playing for a Super Bowl contender is enough and accept whatever Kansas City is willing to give him.
Do you think Travis Kelce will spend his entire career with the Kansas City Chiefs? Or at some point will contract negotiations become a problem?
