The Kansas City Chiefs won their first game of the 2011 season in week four and looked to go on their first winning streak of the season.

It wouldn’t be easy, as they’d hit the road and play a team who had their number over the years. The difference this time around, however, was that Peyton Manning – a guy who was notorious for ripping out the hearts of Kansas City Chiefs fans – didn’t play a single snap in 2011.

As a result of Manning not being the Colts’ quarterback, Indianapolis got off to an 0-4 start, which was obviously a rarity for them during this time. The Chiefs had just gotten into the win column for the first time the week prior.

More from KC Kingdom

No Manning, no problem looked to be the motto for the Colts on their first drive, as they drove right down the field and scored on a six-yard pass from Curtis Painter to Pierre Garcon. The two would connect again in the second quarter on a 67-yarder that put Indy up 17-0.

The Chiefs finally got on the board in the second quarter on a 41-yard pass from Matt Cassel to Dwayne Bowe. From there it went back and forth between the Chiefs and Colts for a bit, as the score at half time was 24-14 Colts. Delone Carter had a three yard rushing score for Indy while Steve Breaston had a 13 yard touchdown pass at the very end of the half.

After such an electric first half, the second half was pretty lackluster with only a total of 14 points being scored. The good news is that those 14 points were all scored by the Kansas City Chiefs.

Cassel connected with Bowe on a five-yard touchdown pass at the end of the third quarter to cut Indy’s lead to three. The Chiefs trailed throughout the entire game, but they took the lead with five minutes left when Cassel linked up with Breaston on an 11-yard touchdown pass to put KC ahead when it mattered most.

The defense held off the Colts offense and notched win number two, moving them to 2-3 on the year. The Colts, on the other hand, dropped to 0-5 and it was clear that Manning WAS their team for such a long time.

The good news for Indy, however, is that this putrid season paved the way for them to land the number one overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft where they took Andrew Luck. He might have retired sooner than many expected, but early in his career, he was incredible.

Key Stats

  • Matt Cassel – 21/29, 257 yards, 4 TD
  • Jackie Battle – 19 carries, 119 yards
  • Dwayne Bowe – 7 receptions, 128 yards, 2 TD
  • Steve Breaston – 4 receptions, 50 yards, 2 TD
  • Curtis Painter – 15/27, 277 yards, 2 TD
  • Delone Carter – 12 carries, 22 yards, TD
  • Pierre Garcon – 5 receptions, 125 yards, 2 TD
  • Dwight Freeney – 1.5 sacks

After an 0-3 start, the Kansas City Chiefs had their confidence back and the hope was that they keep that mentality moving forward. Matt Cassel was great in this game, throwing four touchdown passes while Jackie Battle stepped up in Jamaal Charles‘ absence, rushing for over 100 yards.

When would the Chiefs’ next victory of the 2011 season come?
