The KC Chiefs decided to take Clyde Edwards-Helaire from LSU in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft. The Chiefs decided to shore up one need, but still have others to fill.

Thankfully, the Kansas City Chiefs have a couple of picks on Day 2 of the draft to fill those. What positions need to be addressed? That is what I am here for.

Wide Receiver

This is a deep wide receiver draft and the Chiefs definitely have a need there. Maybe not this year, but with Sammy Watkins and Demarcus Robinson probably gone after this year, Veach and Reid need to be thinking about this.

Not only that, but since when is giving Patrick Mahomes another weapon a bad thing? As for players, judging by Matt Miller’s big board Tee Higgins out of Clemson and Denzel Mims out of Baylor are the current best options available, but they might not make it to pick 63, so maybe the Chiefs go after another one in the third round.

Offensive Line

The tackle spots are good for now, but Mitchell Schwartz and Eric Fisher are starting to get up there in age just a tad, so it might not be a bad idea to look at possible replacements. Now if that was going to happen, the Chiefs probably do that at 32.

More from Chiefs Draft Analysis

More than the tackle spots, however, the Chiefs need to upgrade the interior part of their o-line. Cesar Ruiz went to the Saints in the first round and he was far and away the best interior lineman in this draft. The Chiefs could still go with Lloyd Cushenberry out of LSU in the second round, but after that, there’s a big drop-off between him and the next best option.

Linebacker

A common theme in mock drafts in the first round was the Chiefs taking a Linebacker whether it was Patrick Queen or Kenneth Murray. Obviously neither of those players fell to Kansas City in round one.

This is a position the Chiefs could address on day two. It is a need because Anthony Hitchens hasn’t been worth the contract so far and they do need to upgrade there. According to sports wire, the best linebacker available is Zach Baun out of Wisconsin and he was a fringe first rounder, so him falling to KC at pick 63 is highly unlikely. They’d need to trade up to land Baun.

Defensive Back

With depth at both Corner and Safety lacking and contracts coming up soon, the Chiefs desperately need defensive backs. The Chiefs are in luck though because there are plenty of defensive backs available on Day 2 that should be around when the Chiefs pick.

Someone like Trevon Diggs or Kristian Fuller are capable corners and could fit nicely into the Chiefs defense. Not only that, but the Chiefs have a guy in Tyrann Mathieu that will make sure that they play straight. Out of all the positions I have listed, this is the one where I think the Chiefs go with at least one of their picks.

Conclusions

The KC Chiefs set themselves up nicely by re-signing guys like Bashaud Breeland and Sammy Watkins, which allows them to go by their big board and take the best player on their board. This team just won a Super Bowl with Veach’s scouting being a large part of it.

All of that being said, the Kansas City Chiefs have some major future needs that can and should be addressed on either Day 2 or Day 3.
