The Los Angeles Chargers were one of the worst teams in football in 2019 and hold the sixth overall pick. Will they bring a new quarterback to compete with the KC Chiefs in the AFC West?

For the first time since 2006, there will be someone else playing quarterback for the Chargers organization. Kansas City Chiefs fans have grown accustom to facing Philip Rivers, but it’ll be Tyrod Taylor this year and potentially a rookie quarterback as well.

If the Chargers draft a quarterback with the sixth overall pick, it’ll be yet another young quarterback joining the AFC West. The Broncos took Drew Lock in the second round last year and the Chiefs traded up to get Patrick Mahomes in 2017, making Derek Carr the furthest first round draft memory in the division.

Los Angeles, as it stands now, has basically been linked to getting whoever the Miami Dolphins take at five. In most cases, the Chargers end up with Justin Herbert out of Oregon, but there have been a few mocks where Tua Tagovailoa falls to them at six. Herbert is the safe pick, as Tua experienced some injuries in his final season at Alabama, but that doesn’t mean Herbert won’t be a good player.

The Oregon quarterback threw for 3,471 yards to go along with 32 touchdowns and six interceptions during his senior season, which was capped off with a Rose Bowl victory. Tua, on the other hand, missed a chunk of his 2019 season, but threw for 2,840 yards, 33 touchdowns, and three interceptions through nine games.

Both quarterbacks are talented and could be the long-term solution for the Chargers moving forward. It’d be fun to have a division filled with some of the brightest young quarterbacks in the league with Mahomes, Lock, and either Tua or Herbert taking snaps for three of the four teams in the AFC West.

It’ll be interesting to see what the Chargers decide to do with pick number six. Will they trade up and try to get the quarterback THEY want rather than accepting who wasn’t good enough for Miami? Will they stay put at number six and draft whoever is left or get the best available player at a different position?

Even if the Chargers do take a quarterback, Tyrod Taylor is probably going to be the starter in the first half of the season to help groom whoever they do take. The Kansas City Chiefs have an MVP quarterback and the other teams in the division know that they’ll have to find someone who can come close to matching him on the field if they want any shot at winning the AFC West over the next decade.

Who do you think Los Angeles will take at pick number six?
