Cornerbacks to Target in Round Three and Beyond

5. Reggie Robinson, Tulsa

Robinson is a cornerback with plus size and speed. Listed at 6’1 205 pounds, he clocked a 4.44 40-yard dash. That combination of size and speed gives him the baseline traits to be a dominant corner in the NFL.

He has some improving to do when it comes to being disciplined and recognizing routes, but he uses his length well to help cover for his undeveloped instincts. He also has impressive ball skills.

He will be a little bit of a developmental prospect, but that’s something you can be comfortable with if you can grab a player with his upside in round three. His speed and length will allow him to be a serviceable corner in year one while he improves on his weaknesses.

6. Amik Robertson, Louisiana Tech

This is another one of my favorite targets for the Chiefs this year. He is undersized, but reminds me of Tyrann Mathieu in that he plays almost twice his actual size. If you have the time before the draft check out this dude’s highlights. He is not afraid to lay out some hits despite his smaller stature.

This is a guy who is climbing draft boards and will likely require a third-round pick, but it would be well worth it. His size may not give him quite the upside that Robinson has but his ball skills, toughness, and intensity will allow him to be a big contributor year one. I know Mathieu would love this kid and you should get excited about him too.

7. Troy Pride Jr. Notre Dame

Pride is a bit of a homer pick for me as a Notre Dame fan, but this dude is lightning fast and has a pro-ready build. He is definitely another developmental prospect, but you can’t teach speed. I would take Pride in a heartbeat in round four or five if the Chiefs haven’t addressed the cornerback position yet.

8. Darnay Holmes, UCLA

Holmes is another somewhat undersized guy, but has the speed to help offset it. I see Holmes as a guy who we could develop into a Kendall Fuller-type corner-safety dual role.

I talked about drafting a safety in a recent article and I am all aboard the safety train, but if the Chiefs don’t take a safety early, they could take Holmes in round five and put him in Fuller’s late-season role. This would still allow Spagnuolo to get creative in the secondary and play Mathieu in the slot in sub-packages.

Corners to Avoid

Noah Igbinoghene of Auburn, and Trevon Diggs of Alabama are guys I would avoid if I am the Chiefs. Both of those guys will take a first or second-round selection and will still require development. While I am okay with developing a third-fifth round prospect, I want an immediate contributor in round one.

The KC Chiefs are playing for Super Bowls right now, so they need to draft prospects for right now. That is meant as no offense to either of those players, who both have very high ceilings, the Chiefs just don’t have time to wait on those ceilings.

Recap

The cornerback position is a must address position for the Chiefs and who knows it might be tonight in round one! What do you guys think of these players for the Chiefs? What corner are y’all “banging the table” for this year?
