The Kansas City Chiefs might decide to not draft a running back at all, as they currently have four decent options on their roster, led by Damien Williams.

Even if the Chiefs don’t draft a running back, they’ll more than likely add one or two who went undrafted. Those players can turn into just as good as running backs as high draft picks can, so that’s definitely a strategy to keep in mind as the position has become less popular in the draft.

More from Chiefs Draft Analysis

The Chiefs landed Charcandrick West as an undrafted free agent in 2014 and he went on to do quite well during his time with the organization. Running back is the likeliest position to make a splash as an undrafted free agent, so if the Chiefs go this route, don’t rule those players out from being important weapons in the future.

Running back might not be as important in the draft these days, but it’s still a vital position in the game of football. Teams who can run the ball can control the clock and as a result, can control how the game goes. Chiefs fans know all too well how not having a good run defense can ruin your season, as it allows the opponent to run all over your defense and wind the clock, tiring your defense and doing whatever they want on offense.

Hopefully the Chiefs can add to their draft capital so they’re not armed with just five picks this week. If they do end up rolling with just those five picks, then hopefully they use them wisely. If they see a running back they like and take him, it’d be great if it was one of the players on this list.
