KC Chiefs: Moving up to draft Henry Ruggs III unnecessary move
It’s draft week and that means the rumors are buzzing! The latest is that the KC Chiefs might be interested in trading up to nab Henry Ruggs III out of Alabama. Talk about unfair for the rest of the league.
While the discussion leading up the 2020 NFL Draft has mostly been that the Kansas City Chiefs will probably trade out of round one and arm themselves with more picks, there’s now a new, fun rumor that actually involves them trading up.
Peter King mentioned in his recent mock draft that there’s been talk of the Chiefs wanting to trade up in the draft to select Henry Ruggs III, a speedy receiver out of Alabama, but only if he falls into the 20s (which probably isn’t happening). That would be an interesting move and would make this offense even more unstoppable.
"Craziest rumor of the first round: Chiefs want to trade up for Henry Ruggs if he falls into the twenties. Insane. Do they want every sub 4.35 guy in the National Football League?"
Ruggs, a three-year starter with the Crimson Tide, is nearly a lock to go in top 15, but on the off chance he does fall to pick 20 and beyond, that could be when Kansas City strikes. Ruggs had 746 yards and seven touchdowns last season with Alabama, but also shared targets with Jerry Jeudy – another top 15 pick.

Ruggs was also used in the run game and found the end zone there as well, so just imagine what Andy Reid could do with this kid if the Chiefs did end up with him on their roster.
While this is fun to speculate and discuss, the KC Chiefs don’t need to make this move. Their offense is already one of the most explosive in the league and they’ve brought everyone back from the Super Bowl winning team. Sammy Watkins and Demarcus Robinson are as good as gone after 2020, but the Chiefs should take it one step at a time here.
Trading up to get Ruggs would require surrendering more picks and the Chiefs only have five as it is. Trading one of those five picks just doesn’t seem worth it, especially with all of the talented wide receivers in the 2020 NFL Draft.
The Chiefs could be spreading these rumors because AFC West foe Denver has been linked to Ruggs throughout draft season and they could be trying to play their hand there. Again, this is fun to talk about, but I’m not sure how I’d feel if the Chiefs gave up one of their five draft picks to address a not-so-immediate need.
