KC Chiefs can find next starting running back in 2020 NFL Draft
There’s been a lot of buzz surrounding the KC Chiefs potentially selecting a running back in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft. If they do, this could be their starting running back for the next four or five years.
The running back position has changed quite a bit over the years, especially in the NFL Draft. Teams don’t really target running backs early on in the draft these days, but the Kansas City Chiefs could in the first round due to holding the final pick of round one.
It wasn’t a secret that the Chiefs weren’t a great rushing team last year, finishing the season ranked 23rd in overall rushing offense. Damien Williams was injured on and off throughout the regular season, but he turned it on during the playoffs and a strong case could have been made that he deserved to win MVP in the Super Bowl.
That being said, Williams is headed into the final year of his contract and Kansas City finding their running back of the future would be a smart decision. There are some great prospects in this year’s draft and that – paired with where they land in the first round – could make running back a position they look to address in round one.

Rucker Haringey of FanSided wrote about the best case scenarios for each team in the 2020 NFL Draft and for the KC Chiefs, he said it was finding their next starting running back. Here’s what Haringey had to say,
"The Chiefs can afford the luxury of taking a running back in the first round. Their choice shouldn’t be D’Andre Swift though. Taking Jonathan Taylor would be a better choice at No. 32."
Swift and Taylor are both great options, but taking a running back in the first round is risky, especially with the team having other needs. There are plenty of other talented backs who would still be on the board on Day 2 and Day 3 as well.
The Seahawks took Chris Carson in the seventh round of the 2017 NFL Draft and that’s a prime example of how waiting until later in the draft to take a running back can work out. He might not a world class talent like Christian McCaffrey and other first round picks, but Carson is a solid back for Seattle. That’s all the Chiefs need is a solid back.
That being said, if the KC Chiefs can find their next RB1 for the next half decade in this draft, that’d definitely keep this offense as one of the best during that time. Their run game wasn’t even good last year and they were still one of the most electric offenses in the league, so just imagine adding someone like Clyde Edwards-Helaire or Zack Moss to the back field.
What would you consider to be the best case scenario for the Kansas City Chiefs in the 2020 NFL Draft and would you be okay with them drafting a running back?
