KC Chiefs should not spend one of their five picks on quarterback
The KC Chiefs are armed with only five picks in the 2020 NFL Draft and they don’t need to use any of those five picks on a quarterback.
The Kansas City Chiefs are fortunate to not only have their franchise quarterback in Patrick Mahomes, but to have a number of able backups behind him on the depth chart. Chad Henne, Jordan Ta’amu, and Kyle Shurmur all offer a different style of play, but they also make it an easy decision for the Chiefs in this year’s draft: Drafting a quarterback isn’t necessary.
While the Chiefs might add a few more picks through trades and whatnot, even then, quarterback is not a position they need to be looking at in the 2020 NFL Draft. They have Mahomes as their unquestioned starter for the next 10-15 years and as mentioned earlier, Henne, Ta’amu, and Shurmur are also on the depth chart.
Henne and Ta’amu will likely battle for the backup job with Shurmur probably hanging out on the practice squad, but it does appear that the Chiefs like what Shurmur has to offer.

We all saw this past season how important it was to have a viable backup quarterback, as Matt Moore stepped in after Mahomes’ injury and helped keep the Chiefs afloat. If the Chiefs had dropped that game against the Vikings, they’d have had one less win on the year and wouldn’t have earned the two seed. That’s how much of a different having Moore instead of an unknown mattered.
While there are some intriguing names in this year’s draft at the quarterback spot, it’s just not a position the team should be looking at. Had they not brought in Ta’amu, that wouldn’t have been the case, but Ta’amu showed potential during his short stint in the XFL and could become a Taysom Hill type of player for Kansas City moving forward.
Henne might not be the flashiest of backups, but he’s heading into year three with the organization and provides a good insurance policy should Mahomes sustain some type of injury or can’t play for an extended period of time.
The Chiefs can use their five picks on positions like offensive line, running back, cornerback, linebacker, and defensive line rather than at a position where they have plenty of talent.
What do you think Chiefs Kingdom? Would you want the Kansas City Chiefs to consider drafting a quarterback or do you think they should steer clear of that position in the draft?
